Summer Reading list

 This summer I'm hoping to sink my teeth into a number of books. They say "never judge a book by its cover", but lets be honest we all do to some extent. Most of the books that peak my interest when I'm looking in a bookshop have bright, colourful and aesthetically pleasing covers. The next thing I do is reading the blurb on the back and then finally I'll read the first few pages to see if the opening grabs my attention. 

With this in mind my summer reading list is:

1. the twisted series (love, games, hate, lies) - this series took booktok by storm last year, so I'm a little late to the game, but better late then never. the covers are simple yet elegant. The light, pastel coloured cover with the bright shiny letters really grabs the eye on a bookshelf. These books are perfect if you want to use books to decorate as well a read. The blurb talks of an enemies to lovers story line, that if we're being honest has been done a lot, it will be interesting to see the author's (Ana Huang) take on the genre. 

2. Red, White and Royal Blue - I bought this book online after watching the movie on prime video, so I was glad when I saw the cover how the cover looked. Obvious thought has gone into the design of the cover, the bright pink background with the writing corresponding to the colour. The book has a regal look to it, which I believe is intentional. It will be interesting to see if the movie differs to the book.

3. The Institute - I'm a big fan of the horror genre in tv shows and movies, but I'm relatively new to the book genre. The cover for this book is one of the new ones for Stephen King books redesigned for young adults, and they definitely got it spot on. The dark rich green background grabs the eye on a bookshelf. I have to admit I didn't read the blurb on this book, I bought it on looks and Stephen kings reputation alone, so I'm eager to see if it lives up to his reputation.

ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES: movie vs book (TW. mental health, suicide) SPOILER ALERT

The young adults novel "All the Bright Places" by Jennifer Niven is a well-written and touching story of teenagers struggling with various issues that bring them together in the most unlikely way. The 2020 movie adaptation from netflix of the book, however, has received mixed reviews from the audience. While the book delves into the mental health issues of Theodore Finch and Violet Markey in great detail, from both teens point of view, the movie noticeably skims through certain parts. As a result, some of the story's emotional impact is lost in the film and the audience might not fully understand the depth of the characters' struggles. On a positive note, the movie does an excellent job of characterizing Violet and Theodore as unique and complex individuals with distinct and genuine personalities.
